Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor
All Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) must pass a searching three-part examination to qualify, and they have to reach and maintain the high standards required by the The Driving Standards Agency (DSA). It is illegal to charge for Driving Lessons unless a person is qualified and registered with the DSA.
Before an individual is allowed to register as an Approved Driving Instructor they are assessed by DSA to ensure that they are 'fit and proper' and that they have a high standard of driving and instructional ability. This includes criminal record checks. It makes good sense to make use of a professional ADI because they are an acknowledged expert in driver education and will know better than anyone how to prepare you for the tests.
What to Look Out For
Qualified driving instructors should display an in-date licence in their windscreen during lessons.

A green badge shows that they are fully qualified and are subject to regular checks by DSA to ensure their continued competence and suitability to give instruction.

A pink badge indicates that they have trainee status and are entitled to give paid instruction while acquiring practical experience.
Pupils should also ensure that the photo on the badge matches that of the person providing the instruction. Some of the potential instructors who have failed their examinations will continue teaching despite no qualifications!
Driving instructor examinations are in 3 parts:
- theory
- own driving ability
- teaching skills
They only have 3 attempts at the driving and teaching examinations, which is why many fail and resort to teaching illegally.
They may offer you cheap driving lessons, however, they will NOT have the correct car insurance, will NOT be teaching you modern methods of driving so you could end up paying for lessons for a longer period. They would NOT have a criminal record check (enhanced CRB check)
